Loving Truth

"Truth is so obscure in these times, and falsehood so established, that unless we love the truth, we cannot know it."

Blaise Pascal
Pensees
17th Century

Lord, please give me a love for the Truth, and an obedient heart..

Peter, thank you for this vital succinct reminder from Pascal and yourself to urge us toward greater faithfulness in relation to the truth of God-----in the inclinations of our hearts toward it to begin with, and in the embracing of it and living out the implications of it daily.

A few quotations come to my own mind that I will share. The first is from Francis Scaeffer:

"We need a revolutionary message in the midst of today's relativistic thinking. By revolutionary, or radical, I mean standing against the all pervasive form which the world spirit has taken in our day. This is the real meaning of radical.

God has given his answers in the Bible--- the Bible that is true when it speaks of history and of the cosmos, as well as when it speaks of religious things. And it therefore gives truth concerning all reality. It thus sustains radical rebellion against the relativism and syncretism which are the hallmark of our own day----whether that syncretism is expressed in secular or religious terminology, including evangelical terminology".

I would also highly commend for our thinking and response the chapter in "A Godward Life" by John Piper, titled "Why Being Truth-Driven Is So Crucial". It is probably way too long for me to include it here, but Piper concludes the chapter this way: "Loving truth is a mark of the God-entranced world-view. It is obedience to the first and great commandment". The whole chapter deserves careful reading and reflection-----check it out.

Finally, the words of the Holy Spirit through the apostle:

"I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth" (3 Jn. 4).

We desperately need what you are praying for, and to be praying it ourselves. Thanks again Peter.

Thanks Peter, such a short "blog" but such a tall order.(sorry for the mixed metaphor)
"Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that procedes from the mouth of God." (Jesus, Matt. 4:4)
"What is truth?" (Pontius Pilate, Jn 18)
"Thy word is truth" (Jesus, Jn 17)
"Thou shalt not bear false witness" (Moses, Exodus 20)
We need to fight for, defend, emerse ourselves in, memorize, sanctify through, submit to, reflect upon, earnestly seek, love, die for, rejoice in, meditate on, speak to each other in, expound, promote, teach, exemplify, and so on, as if our lives, safety and happiness depended upon it. I remind us again that it was the first "truth hater" that cast Adam's race into sin and misery....."you will not surely die". And it is "The Truth" that shall set us free.

I thought a shorter post might be appreciated every so often, and I'm glad to oblige! (June has been a full month).

Wonderful comments-- it stirs me up personally, and makes me eager to convey these concerns afresh to my children who've been seriously exposed to relativism by public education.

Thank you again for your wonderful insights, so helpful!
